What Are Medicare Supplement Plans in Florida?
Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, is private coverage that pays for the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare leaves behind — Part A and Part B deductibles, the 20% coinsurance on doctor visits, hospital coinsurance, and more. For Florida residents on Medicare, a Medigap plan turns unpredictable medical bills into a single, predictable monthly premium.
Florida has the second-largest Medicare population in the country, and roughly one in five Florida Medicare beneficiaries uses a Medicare Supplement plan to fill the gaps in Original Medicare. Because the plans are federally standardized, a Plan G from one carrier provides the exact same medical coverage as a Plan G from any other carrier — only the premium and customer service differ. That's why working with a local independent broker matters: we shop every major carrier in Florida so you don't have to.
Why Florida residents choose Medigap
- Freedom to see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare — no networks, no referrals
- Predictable monthly costs instead of surprise bills after every appointment
- Coverage travels with you when you snowbird north or visit family out of state
- Coverage is guaranteed renewable as long as you pay your premium — the carrier cannot drop you for getting older or sicker
- Pairs with a separate Medicare Part D plan for prescription coverage
Plan F vs Plan G vs Plan N — Florida Comparison
The three most popular Medicare Supplement plans for Florida enrollees, side by side. All Medigap plans are federally standardized, so coverage is identical across every carrier — only the premium changes.

Important: Plan F is only available to people who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Premiums shown are typical ranges for a 65-year-old non-smoker in Polk County and vary by ZIP code, gender, and tobacco use.
How to Choose the Right Medigap Plan
The best Medicare Supplement plan depends on three things: your eligibility date, your monthly budget, and how much predictability you want at the doctor's office. Here's how we usually walk our Florida clients through the decision.
If you turned 65 before Jan 1, 2020
Plan F is still available to you and offers the most complete coverage — it pays every gap, including the Part B deductible. Premiums are higher because the enrollment pool is closed and aging, but for retirees who want zero surprise bills it can still be the right choice.
If you became eligible Jan 1, 2020 or later
Plan G is the most popular Medicare Supplement plan in Florida. It covers everything Plan F does except the Part B deductible ($240/year in 2024), and the lower premium usually saves you money over time.
If you want the lowest premium
Plan N trades a slightly lower premium for small copays at the doctor's office (up to $20) and the ER (up to $50, waived if admitted). It's a great fit for healthy enrollees who don't visit the doctor often.
Don't just compare today's premium — compare rate-increase history
Some carriers raise rates aggressively in years 2–5 to attract new enrollees with low introductory pricing. When we shop the Florida Medicare Supplement market for you, we compare each carrier's multi-year rate-increase history alongside today's premium so you don't end up paying significantly more in three years.
Medicare Supplement Plans in Lakeland & Polk County
Because Medicare Supplement plans don't use networks, your coverage works at every Medicare-accepting provider in Polk County and across Florida. That includes:
- Lakeland Regional Health
- The new Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital (opening June 2026)
- BayCare Bartow Regional Medical Center
- Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center in Davenport
- AdventHealth and BayCare specialty clinics throughout Tampa Bay and Orlando
For our Lakeland and Polk County clients, this is one of the biggest reasons to consider Medigap over a Medicare Advantage HMO: when carriers narrow their Advantage networks for the next plan year, your Medicare Supplement coverage doesn't change. Your doctor stays your doctor.
We're a locally owned brokerage at 102 W Orange St in downtown Lakeland. Every consultation is free, with no obligation, and we represent the major carriers active in Florida — including Aetna, Cigna, Humana, Mutual of Omaha, and UnitedHealthcare. Call (863) 225-2875 or request a free quote online.
Medicare Supplement Benefits & Eligibility
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are designed to help cover the "gaps" in Original Medicare — including deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance — making your healthcare expenses far more predictable each month.
To enroll, you must already be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. Your one-time, six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B. During this window, no Florida carrier can deny you coverage or charge more based on your health, regardless of pre-existing conditions.
